Making sure young people have a healthy diet packed with nutritious food is an important part of giving them a stronger start in life. But we know that some children aren’t getting the fruit and veg in their diets that they need to thrive – just 12% of children aged between 11 and 18 are meeting the five-a-day recommendation.
Tesco will be providing £4million worth of funding across the whole academic year, which will encourage young people in communities across the UK to get more fruit and veg into their diets. The scheme will help 140,000 pupils in 400 schools where there is a higher-than-average free school meal ratio, and in total will provide around 16 million pieces of fruit and vegetables.
As well as the 140,000 pupils in 400 schools we’ll be helping directly, I’ll also be inspiring families and carers across the country to learn more about how to prepare fruit and veg.
Persuading children to eat their veg can sometimes make dinner time a bit of a struggle so I’ve created some delicious but easy to prepare recipes to help out.
I’m really excited about Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools because I remember how much I loved cooking as a kid, and including fruit and veg in a simple way makes it not only fun, but good for you too! For me, it’s all about giving our kids the best start possible.
I hope these recipes help everyone at school and at home enjoy more fruit and veggies together. Let’s make mealtime a time for fun and trying new things and show our kids that eating well can be a delicious part of everyday life!
