As students get ready to head off to university for the first time, money worries hang over their heads, and they haven’t even started their courses yet.
New research reveals that 84 per cent of students are concerned about the cost of living, as they prepare to fend for themselves and pay their own bills for the first time with students claiming they would need an extra £487 per month to live the lifestyle they want.
An overwhelming majority of students (90 per cent) are excited to move away from home, become more independent, and look forward to making new friends, but only a few (16%) are keen to handle their own money, the poll of 2,000 adults heading off to or at university from Nationwide finds.
While many students are keen for their first taste of freedom, financial stress is a top concern, as budgeting is a big worry (37 per cent) for many, as well as missing family and friends (45 per cent).
To help students find their way as they take their first big step to independence, Nationwide has teamed up with social media stars GK Barry and Harry Pinero to talk about their own experiences of growing up.
At Nationwide’s takeaway takeover, NationFried, the duo chatted to students about how they plan to manage their pennies when the lump sum hits their account and how planning ahead can help them budget and encourage them to be more mindful.
Former Nottingham Trent student and TikTok star, GK Barry, said: “Having moved away to university, I know firsthand that it can be a big step. It was a pleasure to open the doors to NationFried with Harry Pinero last night and welcome students in to chat about their concerns before they go to uni.
By sharing our own experiences of growing up, I hope it gives students reassurance as they navigate their move. Getting in on the perks of Nationwide’s FlexStudent account will certainly help them on their way.”
Social media personality, Harry Pinero, said: “Nothing beats sitting down for a good chat over a box of fried chicken – particularly with GK Barry!
Getting stuck into our new roles behind the counter at takeaway joint, NationFried, to serve students delicious food and tunes along with sharing our experiences of growing up was the perfect combo. Now, we hope they’ll enjoy the perks of the FlexStudent account and tell their mates to get in on the action too!”
