The Smiths fans are on the edge of their seats after Morrissey’s latest revelation stokes reunion rumours.
The iconic singer of the band, known for classics such as “Panic” and “Bigmouth Strikes Again,” disclosed that Johnny Marr, the group’s legendary guitarist, now has full rights over The Smiths’ legacy.
A statement from Morrissey’s representatives announced this development, sparking hope among followers that Marr might take the idea of a reunion tour under his wing.
Morrissey along with Marr were reportedly presented with a “lucrative” proposal to tour as The Smiths in the upcoming year, provided they reached a mutual agreement.
However, Marr left the offer unanswered, and it has emerged that he has taken complete control of The Smiths’ brand rights.
In a telling statement, Morrissey unveiled: “J Marr has successfully applied for 100 per cent trademark rights / Intellectual Property ownership of The Smiths name. His application has been accepted on whatever oaths or proclamations he has put forward. This action was done without any consultation to Morrissey, and without allowing Morrissey the standard opportunity of ‘objection’.”
He added: “Amongst many other things, this means that Marr can now tour as The Smiths using the vocalist of his choice, and it also prohibits Morrissey from using the name whilst also denying Morrissey considerable financial livelihood. Morrissey alone created the musical unit name ‘The Smiths’ in May 1982.”
The landscape of The Smiths’ future performances has sparked a social media frenzy following the news that Morrissey no longer has rights to perform as the band. Devotees and detractors alike have taken to Twitter to muse over potential collaborations with guitarist Johnny Marr, with one enthusiast tweeting: “Smiths and Company with Rick Astley would honestly be pretty good.”
Rick Astley, catapulted to fame by his hit “Never Gonna Give You Up,” is familiar with The Smiths’ repertoire, having covered their songs in recent live performances.
Another proposed an inventive concept: “tour as the smiths with a different ‘morrissey’ each night. just get special guests to fill in. liam gallagher. bono. jon bon jovi even. i want to see what jarvis cocker can do with this charming man.”
Meanwhile, a third humorously recommended, “Robert Smith on vocals” to uproarious approval. Some fans remain sceptical about any Smiths’ reunion sans Morrissey, with a comment pointing out: “Bro no one is going to see The Smiths without Morrissey.”
