The little UK ‘seaside town’ that’s absolutely nowhere near the sea or a beach | UK | News

A “seaside town” in the West Midlands has a fairground, fish and chips shops, and other classic beach resort amusements—except it is miles away from any beach.

Stourport-on-Severn in Worcestershire is set on the River Severn, where it meets with the historic canal basin. At first glance, the waterside looks like a classic coastal holiday spot.

But instead of fishing boats and sea air, there are charming locks and narrowboats, as well as the kind of old-school beach resort fun you’d find at Southend-on-Sea.

Birmingham Live reports that Treasure Island Fairground has “wide open spaces for football and picnics plus a large playground with a pirate ship, a skate park, and a wood and ropes obstacle course. “

And once you’ve had your fill of the vintage seaside attractions, there are areas where you can sit to watch the ducks bob along the river, as per the outlet.

The park is open all year except Christmas Day, though this can depend on the weather. Another amusement park on Severn Meadows, Playland, offers go-karting and mini golf, but it’s temporarily closed.

Visitors come to the town, which neighbours Kidderminster and Bewdley, to enjoy the attractions, which feel like they’re from a bygone era, with amusement arcades, ice cream stands, chippies, and discount shops where you can buy beach balls and water pistols.

It’s just a 22-mile drive from Birmingham, with the journey taking around 35 minutes.

The attractive Georgian towns of Bewdley and Kidderminster are also nearby along the River Stour.

But there’s plenty to do away from the seaside-esque amusements in this “bustling” town, including antique and collectable shops.

There’s also an outdoor store, Allcock’s, and a homeware outlet, Mooch. As per the outlet, Manton’s jewellery shop, Bentley’s gift boutique – which offers a range of quirky home decor – and Wyred Music Shop at The Swan are also recommended.

But you’ll also find independent butchers, fishing and photography shops, bakers, and a pet store where you can spend an afternoon away.

There’s also Little Owl Farm Park, among the top-rated attractions on TripAdvisor, where you can meet various animals and are open to all ages.

One reviewer from earlier this year called the site in Dunhampton a “delight”, adding, “There was so much to do”.

“The petting zoo was great fun, and the Pygmy goats were great entertainment,” they said, adding: “A choice of two soft play areas, the physical education barn was great for older children as it had much more in it and a great slide.”
