The UK has a long-standing reputation for its impeccable manners, ensuring ‘sorry’, ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ fit into every sentence.
Up and down the country, you can find the friendliest of communities, each with their own charms and traditions.
It’s not just the overseas visitors who find the UK’s affability endearing, but the residents themselves. Many Brits are opting for staycations in cities, quaint villages or seaside towns without needing to fly abroad.
But, out of the long list of metropolises, Glasgow takes the crown as the most friendly city in the country. Scoring an incredible 97.14/100, the Scottish town claims the title, according to Condé Nast’s 2024 Readers Choice Awards.
After a brief stint in fourth position last year, Glasgow has climbed the ladder back up to first place.
The neighbouring city of Edinburgh usually takes the spotlight, yet Glasgow’s irresistible charm and enthusiastic imagination shone through.
The city’s talent for the arts enabled it to claim the UK’s first UNESCO City of Music, as well as being a Scottish base for institutions like ballet and theatre.
Pulsing with creatives and audiences alike, it’s no wonder Glasgow took the title of being the friendliest city.
Missing out on the top spot by just a couple of points is London. Scoring 93 points, the capital comfortably claims second place. Despite the noise and chaos of the city, with busy workers rushing to and from their offices, Londoners are considered to be the most accommodating and accepting.
Outside of Zone One, there’s a plethora of charming neighbourhoods each brimming with different quirks and cultures.
Coming in at third place is the second Scottish city of Edinburgh, winning 91.11 points.
Drawing thousands of visitors each year, there’s an abundance of chic bars and restaurants, not forgetting the iconic Edinburgh Fringe – the world’s largest performance arts festival attracting people from across the globe.
Fourth place is taken by Oxford with 90.91 points, and York just makes it into the top five with a score of 90.77.
Other friendly cities on the list include Bath, Belfast, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham.
