Christmas treats are already lining the shelves in supermarkets – even though it’s only September.
With popular high street brands like M&S and Quality Street launching festive goodies, Christmas 2024 has arrived early. Tesco was one of the quickest retailers which unleashed festive products from July.
In the middle of summer, shoppers were confused to see these products already on the shelves.
Social media users on Reddit posted about the festive chocolates already being on sale, with others reiterating they had already seen customers buying boxes of treats.
The supermarket giant, Tesco, has also allegedly limited the number of chocolate boxes customers could buy.
A picture of a sign placed next to the chocolate tubs in an unknown store and posted online read: “Chocolate tubs MAX 10 per customer.”
Some claimed that people were purchasing the tubs for a reduced Clubcard price and reselling them for a higher amount. Reddit users claimed they expected these tubs were being resold in corner shops or on Amazon.
One user, u/tkaxzyk1991, suggested that businesses were stocking up on the chocolate tubs early to give them as gifts, adding: “Companies buy them as gifts for customers at Xmas. If there’s 140 tubs per pallet, priced at £4.50 now then they go up to £6 at Xmas… they’ve saved £210 per pallet by buying now instead of at Xmas.”
It appears that the ban is not the same for all Tesco stores, with some having higher restrictions than others. Restrictions are not linked to shortage of the products but instead to fairness – to ensure all customers can purchase the item during periods of increased demand.
