Chancellor Rachel Reeves has defended the measure by claiming that the government uncovered what she branded a “£22 million black hole” in the country’s finances after coming into power.
The benefit had been introduced by Gordon Brown in 1997, the last time Labour assumed power, and it has been universally given to pensioners each year.
From this winter, it will be means tested meaning that only a small proportion of UK pensioners will receive it.
Last year, Reeves claimed £1,269.30 in expenses to cover her own utility bills, despite earning £91,346.
Mr Upton is one of the lucky ones, at least for this winter. The draw, which usually amounts to £50, had not been picked in 10 days therefore the prize pot had rolled over, accumulating to £500. However, another lucky member of the scheme also claimed the draw.
Chris Holbrook, founder of Pick My Postcode said: “Whether you agree with the government’s money saving measure or not, you can’t disagree with free money.
“We’re so glad to be able to come to the rescue just in time.”
Many have expressed incredulity at the government’s proposals which are expected to save no more than £1billion. Campaigners from Age UK have called for the plan to be scrapped, with over 500,000 people responding to a petition.
Many within the party have expressed concern with the policy, but only one Labour MP voted against it. However 52 Labour MPs did abstain from the vote.
