Mark Cranston, 62, began collecting them 15 years ago when he wanted a doorstop for his garden shed – and now has more than 4,000.

He has them stacked in his shed, but says it would be “selfish” to keep them all to himself and wants them to be displayed for everyone to enjoy.

The collection includes a fire brick from the SS Politician, which ran aground in the Outer Hebrides in 1941 carrying 264,000 bottles of malt whisky, inspiring the novel Whisky Galore which became a classic Ealing comedy.

Another is from the demolition of the execution block at Scotland’s largest prison. The oldest is a drainage tile from 1833, and there are even some marking special royal milestones.

Wife Karen, 47, daughter Hannah, 30, and son Jonathon, 28, have added to the collection, and his hobby is shared with pal Ian Suddaby who has 2,000 bricks of his own. Mark, from Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders, said: “We want to put them in a museum. We don’t want to lose them and Scotland doesn’t want to lose them.”
