A woman’s body was spotted floating in the sea off the Isle of Wight this morning.
HM Coastguard was alerted to the body which was pulled from the water at about 9.40am on Sunday (September 8). The body had been spotted off the Esplanade near Shanklin seafront.
A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said officers were called at 9.25am today to a report that the body of a woman had been seen in the water at the beach in Shanklin.
They added: “We attended the scene alongside our Coastguard colleagues. We will provide further information as soon as we are able to.”
Island Echo reported that members of Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team were involved in the response.
The same publication said a section of the beach was cordoned off. A photo posted on social media showed a helicopter and lifeboat just off the shore.
A spokeswoman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said HM Coastguard responded to reports of a person in the water in Shanklin this morning.
She added the Coastguard was alerted at around 9.30am, adding: “Bembridge and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Teams, a lifeboat from Bembridge RNLI and the coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Lee-on-the-Solent were sent to the scene.”
A Royal National Lifeboat Institution spokesperson said Bembridge RNLI was tasked by the Coastguard at around 9.50am this morning to reports of someone in the water off Shankin.
They added: “The volunteer crew launched their Tamar all weather lifeboat and once on scene assisted in a shoreline search using the lifeboats smaller daughter boat, the Y boat, before they were stood down.”
Shanklin is on the south east coast of the Isle of Wight and faces the English Channel.
