With autumn quickly approaching, our gardens are set to be covered in rotten fruits as they fall from nearby trees, and experts have warned that there could be some very costly consequences.
MyBuilder.com gardening expert, James Lewis claims that while some might be tempted to simply just leave the fruit to decay, doing so will leave you having to pay a hefty price for garden repairs.
James Lewis said: “It may seem like an unnecessary job to pick up fruit, but actually it can cost you a lot more time, energy, and even money, if you leave it.
“Unpleasant outcomes, like the smell it can cause, are one thing – but attracting rats or causing the death of your tree is entirely another.
“Pick up the fruit and dispose of it in a compost heap well away from your home, or take it to the tip if needed. It will save you many potential problems if you do.”
Experts added that leaving fruit on your lawn can also lead to unwanted pests such as bees and wasps hovering over the fruit, while increasing your chances of one of the insects stinging you.
Meanwhile, there could be damage to nearby trees as diseases such as fungi and bacteria spread from the rotten fruit to the rest of the garden, sometimes causing irreparable damage.
And, in some cases, the fruit that has fallen next to trees can soon ignite the growth of weeds.
While some issues are little more than a time-consuming nuisance, others caused by the falling fruit can be extremely costly to put right, and can set you back several hundreds of pounds.
Experts have warned that the fruit should be picked up as soon as possible as the issues arising from the rotten fruits will start to spiral if left too long.
