Drivers are cautioned against a common error that not only harms their vehicle but also increases fuel consumption and thus costing more money. Breaking this habit could mean fewer trips to the petrol station and more savings, and with petrol prices amongst many other things remaining high, every single penny saved can make a big difference.
To help, Driving Test Success aka @drivingtestsuccess, creators of a top theory practice app, is now advising both new and seasoned drivers to “avoid harsh braking.” They explain in a TikTok video that this practice forces the car to exert more effort saying that it causes your “car to have to work harder to recover from lost momentum.”
In another tip, the experts also note in another TikTok video that your fuel can also be used up faster when you have the windows down. Answering the question “When does having your windows open use more fuel than AC”. In their reply, they warn: “The wind resistance from having your windows open will use more fuel above speeds of around 45mph.”
As well as fuel, other driving experts including RAC Drive have said that whilst many motorists will have to perform an emergency stop, and therefore suddenly brake, doing this often will cause more issues further down the line that could cost hundreds. They explain: “Consistent late braking will place more strain on the braking system, wearing out your pads and discs faster, as well as costing you more fuel in the process. In general, a slow and considered approach to driving, anticipating the road ahead, is better for your car and the environment.”
