If you’re an avid coffee drinker, you may like to think you know a thing or two about the popular beverage, but you actually could be making a mistake that’s pretty common – and it’s all due to how you store it.
According to coffee expert, Jonny England from Löfbergs, homebrewers are making this mistake on a daily basis – and it could be the reason your coffee might not taste too great. The experts explain: “While it’s common for people to store their coffee in the fridge, this actually isn’t best practice.
“Storing coffee in the fridge will actually speed up the coffee degrading process due to the moisture in the fridge. In addition to this, coffee is very susceptible to absorbing other odours from your fridge, and no one wants to drink coffee that tastes like onions.”
As it is with most food and drink, coffee always tastes better when it’s fresh – usually within the first three months of roasting. The experts suggest that once the packet has been opened, try to consume the coffee within a few weeks. This is because the coffee can lose its flavour quickly once exposed to oxygen.
The error warning comes amid a brand new study by Breville which revealed Brits drink three cups of coffee a day – and the time people tend to have their first is 7am. Because of this, Rex Isap, the sleep expert at Happy Beds, has issued a warning to Brits, urging people to not avoid coffee altogether, but instead hold off from drinking it within the first hour of waking up.
Rex said that “during the day, your brain produces a chemical called adenosine. Essentially, this promotes sleep; as you are awake longer, it builds up and helps you feel sleepy. But caffeine blocks the Adenosine receptors, which keeps you alert and promotes wakefulness. If you have ever struggled with sleeping after a coffee, this could be why”.
