THE UK Children’s Parliament will hold an emergency Cobra meeting next week to discuss the devastation caused by coastal erosion.

Young politicians will travel to Hemsby in Great Yarmouth, which is said to have the worst-affected coastline in Europe.

Five cliff-top houses were demolished last year and residents have warned it will not be long before more are lost, causing untold misery.

Three leading members of the UK Children’s Parliament, founded by the late MP Sir David Amess, will chair a meeting with child MPs from Hemsby Primary School and Great Yarmouth’s new MP Rupert Lowe.

Child Prime Minister Clark Dearson, 11, said: “The erosion situation in Hemsby is urgent: children are being affected, and homes are being lost.”

The youngsters will learn about the geology of the area and tour problem locations. Their meeting, set to be held at The Dunes by Lodge Park Homes (formerly Pontins Great Yarmouth), will also be attended by representatives from the local council and the Environment Agency.

A Lego recreation of the erosion problem will be on display to help assess possible solutions, including a proposed 1.3km rock barrier and residents moving inland.

Lance Martin, a former serviceman who has been sleeping on friends’ sofas since his home became uninhabitable due to erosion, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for all to see how the next generation handle the antiquated policies of today and move forward.”

The UK Children’s Parliament for primary school kids is backed by Wakelet, Microsoft365 and the Daily Express.
