Carol Vorderman blasted for ‘letting down pensioners’ after begging for Labour votes | UK | News

Labour luvvie Carol Vordereman has been blasted for “letting down pensioners” by urging them to vote for the party only for it to scrap the Winter Fuel Allowance.

People rounded on the former Countdown star after she today posted a video on X plugging a new book about politics.

The mathematician, who delved into the world of politics with a deep seated hatred of the Tories, also promoted a debating event she is holding at the Southbank Centre in London on September 21.

She said anyone who buys a ticket to the event, when she will debate the contents of the book, called Now What? On a Mission to Fix Broken Britain, will receive a free copy.

Ms Vorderman pushed for Labour votes ahead of the election with lots of ant-Conservative rhetoric.

In a post about the book on X she explained why.

She said: “Written simply it’s bang up to date with the election results, the behind the scenes stories since I started commenting about the Tories (oops!) 20 months ago, and thoughts on how we have to fix our politics.

“It’s a book for people who don’t normally think about politics, for those who know in their gut that something very bad has been happening for 14 years and that it can very easily happen again unless we change the system.”

But, Labour has taken a huge hit with its initial popularity with the early announcement by Chancellor Rachel Reeves that the non means tested Winter Fuel Allowance will be scrapped.

It has caused a major backlash against the party now being aimed at Ms Vorderman.

Posters on X let her know their thought in comments on the video.

One posted: “Carol you persuaded a lot of pensioners to vote Labour. Are you ashamed of that?”

Another quipped: “Fantastic. Perhaps you could explain why pensioners’ winter payments have been cut but foreign aid increased?”

A third said: “You campaigned for change at the General Election to get rid of the corrupted Tories and their austerity.

“Now eight weeks on we are in the same position with the Labour austerity, was this the change you were expecting – the same old same old?”

Another just joked: “Resorting to giving her book away!”

However, Ms Vorderman remains committed to seeing if Labour can improve the country.

In one of her own posts she said: “Now we have a new government, and there is some hope on the horizon. But the real political issues that allowed the last government to mismanage and deceive us for so long run deep.

“This is a book for those who have been made to feel as though politics isn’t for them. But I’ll show you how we all made a difference in the election, and how, by working together, we can influence our politics going forward.”

Now What? On a Mission to Fix Broken Britain, by Carol Vorderman, is due for publication on September 12.
