The UK has announced a pivotal role in the development of advanced long-range missile capabilities. This will be done in partnership with European allies.
According to a recent Ministry of Defence press release, Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed the UK’s participation in the European Long-range Strike Approach programme during a NATO Defence Ministers meeting in Brussels.
The programme, involving collaboration between the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Poland, aims to strengthen Europe’s defence systems by the 2030s.
The development of cutting-edge long-range missiles will enhance NATO’s collective air defence and reinforce the alliance’s security.
This announcement comes amid heightened concerns about global security and the increasing importance of NATO’s eastern flank, particularly in the face of ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine.
As part of the UK’s broader commitment to strengthening NATO’s eastern defences, Healey also signed a new bilateral defence roadmap with Estonia, reaffirming the UK’s readiness to support its NATO allies on the frontline.
Under this agreement, the UK will hold thousands of troops from the Army’s 4th Brigade at high readiness, ready to deploy rapidly to Estonia in the event of a crisis.
These troops will be equipped with advanced military hardware, including Challenger 3 tanks and Boxer armoured vehicles.
They will be stationed in Estonia as part of NATO’s forward defence posture.
Healey said: “As global threats increase, the UK’s unshakeable commitment to NATO has never been more important.
“We are boosting our support for Estonia, with thousands of troops ready to deploy rapidly to the Russian border.”
