For more than a century it has been tipped over eggs, lettuce and tomatoes to give them a hint of the exotic, and it has also faced stiff competition from trendy rivals.

But 110 years on, Salad Cream remains a firm favourite with Brits, who eat nearly 190,000 tons a year. It was first sold in 1914 – just as the First World War broke out – by Charles Hellen, the UK boss of Heinz.

And it had taken chefs eight years of testing before it was judged to be “just right”. Now the garnish – which contains water, egg yolk, rapeseed oil, mustard powder, sugar, cornflour and spirit vinegar – is Britain’s fifth most popular condiment, with sales topping £30million a year.

Only ketchup, brown sauce, vinegar and mayo are more popular.

Thiago Rapp, of manufacturers Kraft Heinz, said: “The love for it remains constant despite evolving British palates.”
